Prof. Wim Ceelen is a full professor of Surgical Oncology at Ghent University, Belgium, and a surgical oncologist at Ghent University Hospital. He treats advanced and recurrent colorectal cancer, retroperitoneal sarcoma, and peritoneal metastases.
He is a senior clinical researcher from the Fund for Scientific Research – Flanders (FWO), and leads the Experimental Surgery lab at Ghent University. His lab focuses on the biological and biomechanical microenvironment of metastatic colorectal cancer, with a focus on peritoneal metastasis and lymphatic dissemination.
Areas of interest include mapping of the within-patient heterogeneity of the immune contexture of peritoneal metastases, and the elucidation of the premetastatic niche in the pathophysiology of lymph node metastasis in colorectal cancer.
As a trainer and teacher, he has a keen interest in biomedical statistics and evidence-based medicine. He has obtained over 8 Mio. Euro in funding for translational and clinical research, resulting in over 250 peer reviewed papers and an h index of 54.
Prof. Ceelen is a current member of the Board of Directors of ESSO, and past president of the Belgian Society of Surgical Oncology. He is the editor-in-chief of Acta Chir Belg and associate editor of Int J Hyperthermia, European Surgical Research, Frontiers in Oncology, and Pleura and Peritoneum.
