
Bernhard Holzner graduated in Psychology from the University of Innsbruck in 1994. He went on to earn additional qualifications in Clinical Psychology and Health Psychology (Vienna, 1995) as well as in Psychotherapy (Munich, 1998). Since 1994, he has been a staff member of the Division of Psycho-Oncology and Psycho-Immunology at the Department of Psychiatry, Medical University of Innsbruck.
In 2003, he was appointed Associate Professor of Psychotherapy and spent several months at the Center on Outcomes, Research and Education in Evanston/Chicago. That same year, he became Associate Director of the Division of Psycho-Oncology, with a particular focus on research in the field of patient-reported outcomes (PROs).
In 2015, Dr. Holzner was appointed Professor at the Medical University of Innsbruck and has since served as Head Psychologist at the Department of Psychiatry. He also established the Health Outcomes Research Unit, which specializes in methodological aspects such as questionnaire development, the use of PROs in clinical trials, threshold definitions, and the implementation of PROs in routine clinical care.
Dr. Holzner has published more than 240 articles on PROs and served as Associate Editor of Quality of Life Research. Since 2021, he has been a member of the Executive Committee of the EORTC Quality of Life Group. He is recognized internationally as a leading expert in the implementation of PRO assessments in routine oncology practice and in the development of electronic tools for PRO assessment. He is also one of the developers of the CHES software tool.
