
Chara A. Demetriou, Ph.D. is a registered Clinical and School Psychologist and currently serves as President of the Cyprus Psychological Association. She is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the American University of Beirut Mediterraneo. Dr. Demetriou’s work bridges clinical practice, research, and policy, with a strong focus on supporting individuals and families as they navigate psychological challenges across the lifespan. As a practising psychologist, she is particularly interested in how individuals cope with adversity. Her clinical approach integrates evidence-based therapies with a growing emphasis on mindfulness and values-based interventions, which support individuals in managing distress, enhancing psychological flexibility, and maintaining meaning and quality of life. Her research is grounded in Developmental Psychopathology and focuses on understanding the mechanisms underlying psychological difficulties and on designing and implementing effective prevention and intervention programs. She has published in international peer-reviewed journals, including the European Journal of Developmental Psychology, and her work has been supported by national funding bodies in Cyprus. Beyond academia, Dr. Demetriou actively contributes to mental health advocacy and policy development, working closely with institutions and stakeholders to promote accessible, evidence-based psychological support. Through both her clinical and leadership roles, she is committed to advancing holistic and person-centred approaches to mental health care, particularly in contexts where psychological resilience, acceptance, and values-driven living are essential.
