George Kapetanakis is President of the Hellenic Cancer Federation - ELLOK, the national umbrella organisation representing cancer patient associations in Greece that serves as the Hellenic National Cancer Mission Hub under the European Mission on Cancer. He is a member of the Board of Directors of All.Can International and contributes to national cancer policy development through his participation in the Greek Ministry of Health working groups on the National Cancer Registry, Clinical Trials, and the development of Greece’s National Cancer Plan. He is also a member of the ESMO Patient Advocacy Working Group.
In addition, he serves on the Board of Directors of the Foundation of the Hellenic Society of Hematology and is an active volunteer with the Bone Marrow Donation Association “Orama Elpidas,” supporting awareness and mobilisation efforts for voluntary stem cell donation.
His engagement in cancer advocacy was shaped by his personal experience as a cancer patient, which inspired a long-term commitment to patient empowerment, support, and representation. Since 2015, he has worked alongside fellow advocates to strengthen the voice of cancer patients in Greece and promote their meaningful involvement in healthcare decision-making.
At both national and European level, he advocates for patient-centred cancer policies and sustainable National Cancer Plans that can deliver measurable improvements in outcomes, equity, and quality of care beyond political cycles. He believes that the success of any cancer plan depends not only on its ambition, but on its effective implementation in patients' everyday lives.
Professionally, he works in the financial services sector.
