Dr Joachim Schüz is Head of the Environment and Lifestyle Epidemiology Branch at the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the cancer research agency of the World Health Organisation, located in Lyon, France (IARC/WHO). The Branch leads the IARC/WHO research on causes and primary prevention of cancer on occupational hazards, environmental contaminants, some lifestyle factors, and all types of radiations.
Dr Schüz is senior cancer epidemiologist with over 30 years of experience. Dr Schüz has been heading the environmental research at IARC/WHO for the past 14 years. Before arriving at IARC/WHO he was head of the Epidemiology and Biostatistics Department of the Danish Cancer Institute (Copenhagen, Denmark). From 1993 to 2005 he worked as epidemiologist at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz (Germany), first as research fellow and finally Associate Professor at the Institute of Medical Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Informatics. He received his PhD in cancer epidemiology in 1997 and his habilitation in 2002. Dr Schüz is currently Chair of the Cancer Prevention Europe (CPE) consortium, a network of key cancer research and prevention institution across Europe, and co-PI of the European Code against Cancer. Dr Schüz has co-authored more than 450 publications in peer-reviewed journals.
