Marlies Wakkee is an associate professor and dermatologist at the Erasmus MC Cancer Institute in Rotterdam. She is the chairperson of the European Dermato-Epidemiology Network, the Epidemiology and Clinical Research Task Force of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology(EADV) and of the Dutch Melanoma and Skin Cancer Group – Tumor Focus Group.
She is the principal investigator of various skin cancer related projects focusing on improving the quality and efficiency of dermato-oncological care. An aim that is triggered by the steeply rising skin cancer incidence, both affecting patients and healthcare systems. Her main research lines are identification of high-risk squamous cell carcinoma patients through multilevel data integration, the development, implementation and evaluation of artificial intelligence in the diagnostic trajectory of skin cancer patients and the development and implementation of personalized information for skin cancer patients. She has published over than 70 articles in international peer reviewed medical journals and contributed to the EADV Policy Roundtable Towards earlier detection of skin cancer in Europe Report.
