European Parliament creates its first public health committee in full standing

18 December 2024, Brussels: During the final plenary session of the year, the European Parliament approved the creation of a standing committee for public health (SANT) for the 2024-2029 legislature.

The European Cancer Organisation (ECO) welcomes this milestone as a recognition of level of importance EU health policy holds for its elected representatives and the public they serve. The c opportunity to prioritise and accelerate public health improvements, including delivery of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan.

In February 2023, the European Parliament approved the creation of a public health subcommittee under the remit of the Environment and Public Health Committee. The leaders of the political groups in the European Parliament have now determined to upgrade its status to a more formal standing committee. The decision was confirmed by plenary today, adopting the necessary modification to Parliament’s rules of procedure.

Prof. Csaba Dégi, President of the European Cancer Organisation, said:

‘This development is much needed, as the lessons of the Covid-19 pandemic remain to be learnt. The EU's role in helping countries address common health challenges, including cancer, is powerful and transformative,  It is only right that the European Parliament reflects this with a committee of such stature and standing. Once again, MEPs are reflecting the logic and public support for an EU with a health agenda.’

The European Cancer Organisation looks forward to continued collaboration with MEPs and the Committee on Public Health to monitor the progress of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and support its implementation in all EU Member States.
