Defining cancer survivorship: your voice matters

12 March 2025

The ECO Survivorship and Quality of Life Network is launching a survey of member societies and patient organisations to understand their views of ‘survivorship’.  The results will inform the Network’s future activities.

The study is seeking consensus on:

a)  Who is a cancer survivor?

b)  What is cancer survivorship?

c)  Should we use alternative terminology, e.g. persons living with cancer / through cancer / beyond cancer?

d)  Should we sub-classify cancer survivors? If so, how?

e)  Should we sub-classify cancer survivorship? If so, how?

The survey will be done on line in three separate rounds (over 6 to 9 weeks). The first round will involve a series of pre-determined statements, and respondents will be asked whether they “Strongly agree”, “Agree”, “Neither agree nor disagree”, “Disagree”, “Strongly disagree” with each statement. They will also be able to suggest changes to the statements (for clarity), and new statements relevant to the topic.

The respondents will be asked to answer on behalf of their member society or patient organisation (rather than their personal opinion). The second and third rounds will include refined statements, and the pooled results from the previous round. Responses / comments will be anonymous, and consensus requires ≥75% agreement with an individual statement.

All ECO’s member societies and patient organisations are encouraged to take part, including those not directly involved in the Network. This will ensure the relevance of the findings. We would like each member society and patient organisation to nominate a single person to represent its views, and send their contact details by 28th March to Prof Andrew Davies (Co-Chair Survivorship and Quality of Life Network): This email address is being protected from spambots.
