The growing use of oral cancer treatments is a welcome advancement in cancer care, offering patients greater flexibility and making at-home care more accessible. This is especially beneficial for patients in Europe who may live far from cancer centres, reducing travel time and easing the burden on both patients and healthcare providers.
However, the growing use of oral chemotherapy also brings new challenges.
To address these, the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines and Healthcare (EDQM), part of the Council of Europe, has launched a new survey on oral cancer treatment. Developed in collaboration with the European Society of Oncology Pharmacy and supported by the European Cancer Organisation and its Patient Advisory Committee, the survey seeks to inform regulatory and healthcare policy decisions by capturing the experiences and perspectives of three key groups: patients, professional societies, and pharmacists.
Each group has access to its own tailored version of the survey:
Patients
The survey for patients seeks to better understand the experiences and needs of patients receiving cancer treatment at home. The goal is to improve the safe and effective use of oral cancer medicines and enhance the support provided by healthcare professionals. Patients’ feedback will ultimately help healthcare professionals better support patients like them in the future.

Professional societies
The survey for professional societies seeks to explore current practices and gather insights from healthcare professionals across Europe regarding patient counselling for oral anti-cancer treatments. The goal is to identify common practices, national frameworks, and areas where additional guidance or harmonisation may be beneficial.

Pharmacists
The survey for pharmacists seeks to better understand how pharmacists across Europe are involved in supporting patients receiving oral chemotherapy. Their insights will be invaluable in identifying current practices, challenges, and areas where further guidance is needed.
