We are saddened by the news that Harald zur Hausen, a virologist renowned for his ground-breaking research linking the human papillomavirus (HPV) and cancer, passed away on 29 May 2023, at the age of 87.
His work revolutionized our understanding of HPV's role in cervical cancer development, leading to advancements in prevention and treatment. Hausen's commitment to public health and his profound contributions to medical science will be remembered as a lasting legacy in the fight against HPV-related cancers.
Born on March 11, 1936, in Gelsenkirchen, West Germany, Hausen's career was marked by numerous accolades, including the 'Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine' in 2008. His research not only uncovered the connection between HPV and cervical cancer but also inspired global efforts to raise awareness of HPV, promote vaccination, and eradicate the many cancers it causes.
