The development of an inter-specialty cancer training programme across Europe
INTERACT-EUROPE has been an 18-month project (June 2022 - November 2023) co-funded by the EU under the EU4Health programme 2021-2027 as part of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan. INTERACT-EUROPE has brought together 33 partners from 17 countries aiming at developing a European inter-specialty cancer training programme involving all main oncology disciplines and professions, cancer centres and patient groups, based on relevant needs assessments.
The project has fostered a patient-centric approach to quality cancer care through the promotion of multi-disciplinary and multi-professional team working.
How?
The first funded phase of the project created a curriculum, recruited an early cohort of trainees and participative cancer centres, investigated the application of novel technologies to the programme such as automatic translation technology, and set out a long-term vision for inter-specialty cancer training in Europe. INTERACT-EUROPE embraces the values of patient-centricity and inclusivity and aims at making a lasting contributing to improved cancer patient outcomes and patient care across Europe.
Impact?
The INTERACT-EUROPE project encompasses several aspects of innovative, patient-centred care and aims to produce an impact lasting well beyond the project duration. It resonates with other EU policies, programmes and legislation – e.g. CERV, Erasmus +, Digital Agenda.
Building upon outcomes and contributions of all project partners, the project’s Blueprint will ensure the long-standing impact of the project. It will outline key recommendations and requirements for the successful delivery of a technology Inter-Speciality Cancer Training Programme (ISCTP) in Europe. Following the completion of the project, the European Cancer Organisation will continue to promote the Blueprint recommendations to policymakers and healthcare professionals, mainly through its Member Societies, the European Cancer Summit, as well as regulation advocacy activities and social media campaigns.
