This Focused Topic Network helps to bring forward policy needs from scientists and actors at all levels of cancer research in Europe.

The Research Policy Network is presently focused on:

• Exploring how identified systematic barriers to the highest performance of European cancer research can be addressed;
• Promoting consensus policy recommendations to the EU institutions and national governments for improvement of the cancer research environment in Europe.

The European Cancer Organisation’s Research Policy Network, chaired by Professor Christine Chomienne, has published a new  Green Paper on EU investment in cancer research.

It sets out ideas to improve how EU-supported cancer research is planned, governed, funded, and translated into better outcomes for patients and society. It builds on the momentum of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and the EU Cancer Mission and invites debate on optimising opportunities for the next EU multiannual financial framework (2028–2034).

The Research Policy Network in 2024: Steps Taken and Objectives Identified

In 2024, Network participants had the opportunity to share input on the future activities and priorities for European cancer research and innovation policy at large. Reflections included:

• the importance of investment and support for research in cancer prevention, non-systemic cancer treatment modalities and patients’ quality of life throughout their cancer pathway, including such elements as nutrition and distress; and,
• the need for cancer research and innovation to be based on patients’ needs, to give strong attention to implementation of research outcomes via health systems optimization and to embrace meaningful citizen and patient involvement.

Ambitious, cutting-edge research is essential to turn the tide against cancer, allowing more effective innovations in diagnosis and treatment to benefit patients and societies.

The Research Policy Network of the European Cancer Organisation brings together stakeholders from across the cancer community to examine all policy needs faced by scientists, healthcare professionals, patients, and decision-makers along the cancer research pathway. This will focus on basic and translational research, health service and public health research, clinical, implementation, across Europe and its benefits to cancer patients and health systems.
